Isabel Ribeiro is a retired Full Professor and Distinguished Professor at the Instituto Superior Técnico (IST) of the University of Lisbon. She received her BSc (1978), MSc (1983) and PhD (1988) in Electrical and Computer Engineering from IST and her Habilitation (Agregação) (2000) from the Technical University of Lisbon in Control and Robotics. In 1992, she co-founded the Institute for Systems and Robotics (ISR), a research unit that is part of the Associate Laboratory LARSyS (Laboratory of Robotics and Engineering Systems), always rated excellent by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), of which she was President and Vice President, and where she carries out research as a Senior Researcher. She is a researcher and expert in mobile robotics, a scientific field in which she was a pioneer in Portugal. She has supervised doctoral and master students. She is the author of 1 book and author/co-author of more than 150 scientific publications. She has given talks at numerous conferences and regularly gives lectures in schools to introduce young people to the field of robotics. At IST, she was responsible (1990-1991) for a project that developed and installed, for the first time in Portugal, a system of Automated Guided Vehicles for the automatic transport of materials in factories, responsible and/or member of the research team of R&D projects funded by successive Framework Programs of the European Union, director of a project under the NATO Science for Stability Program, responsible for five projects in the field of mobile robotics under the European Fusion Program integrated in the work of ITER (International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor) and director and/or researcher of R&D projects funded by national entities. Since 1988, she has regularly participated in activities related to higher education management and science and technology management. She has been a member of the IST Executive Board on four occasions, serving as Vice-President for two biennia. At IST, she has also served as Vice-Chair of the Scientific Council, Chair of the Board of the School Assembly, and Vice-Chair of the School Council. She was an elected member of the General Council of the Technical University of Lisbon. From 2008 to 2011, she was an advisor to the President of FCT in the area of projects and research units management, and in 2016-2017 she was a member of the Board of Directors of FCT. . She was elected Corresponding Member of the Lisbon Academy of Sciences in 2023, has been an Advisory Member of the Order of Engineers since 2012, and is a founding member of the Portuguese Robotics Society. In 2016, she was selected by the National Agency Ciência Viva as one of the "Women in Science", and in 2018, Técnico awarded her the title of Distinguished Professor in recognition of her "exceptional and pioneering contributions to advanced training and scientific leadership in the field of mobile robotics". In March 2023, the Rotary Club of Lisbon honored her with a Rotary recognition for her professional career.
